Westmill Windfarm open daySaturday 3rd May saw the 'grand opening' of Westmill Windfarm. Adam Twine, farmer and the driving force behind this scheme thanked everyone for their support over the years. Johnathan Porritt, well known long-standing environmental activist and Westmill Co-op member 'opened' the farm. He spoke that he had woken to the depressing news that Boris Johnson was the new Mayor of London (depressing because his ideas on climate change come from George Bush), and coupled with the lack of positive action from Gordon Brown, he could only be inspired by the positive community action that has resulted in the Westmill Windfarm finally being built and generating clean power. Westmill Windfarm is by the Highworth to Shrivenham road, just a few metres outside the Borough of Swindon. It can be clearly seen from the A420 Oxford road and from the railway line from Swindon towards London. It is also quite an impressive sight from the Lawn in Old Town.
(Jonathan Porritt & Adam Twine proposing a toast to the success of the windfarm) Climate Change Bill announced in Queen's speechSwindon MPs support SCAN in the call for annual targetsThe government has announced a Climate Change Bill for the coming year. This is great news and reflects an intensive campaign by environmental and other voluntary organisations over the past nine months. However there is still disagreement as to whether annual mandatory emissions targets should be set as part of the bill. So far emissions have continued to rise in the UK and many campaigners believe legislation is required to get them on a downward trend. SCAN are working with the two Swindon MPs Michael Wills and Anne Snelgrove and as a direct result of our lobbying we have secured their support for annual mandatory targets. They are both indicating that they are keen to do more to combat climate change. The more contact they receive from their constituents the better so please write to your MP!
