This is a slightly updated version of the document which was circulated prior to the EditMe workshop at which we decided to set up this web site. It explains the basics of creating and editing pages, including attaching files and pictures to pages. Don't forget that EditMe also provides its own help web site - http://help.editme.com/ Contents
Create a new page / editing a pageCreate a new page by clicking the “New” link. The web address of this page is determined by the name you give to the page at this point, so if I created a page called “MyPage”, the address of the page would be http://scan.editme.com/MyPage. Make sure the “editor mode” selector is set to “rich text editor”, and click the “submit” button. You should now be looking at a form where you can type in and format the text for your new page. If you use Word or similar, many of the buttons will be familiar to you already, but if you don’t recognise any of the buttons, hover the mouse pointer over them for an explanation. You will also be glad to hear that common keyboard shortcuts like CTRL-B (bold), CTRL-U (underline), CTRL-V (paste) are supported, making it even more Word-like. The page title is initially set to the name you entered when creating the page, although you can change the title later and the address of the page stays the same. So although my page is called MyPage, I can change the title to “A page that I created”, and that’s what’ll be displayed at the top of the page. When you’ve finished entering the text of your page, click the “save” button to see how it looks. If you want to change it, click the “edit” link to go back to the editing form. You can edit any page in the site like this, by clicking “edit” whilst you’re viewing it. NavigationClick on the “index” link to see a list of all the pages in the site – you should see the page you’ve just created in the list, along with the pages which were already on the demo site, and any others which have been created during the workshop, or maybe by other visitors to the demo site. But we want to present visitors to the web site with easy links to the main pages, which we can do using a special page called the menu. This appears down the site side of every page (which side depends on the template the site is using), but other than that it behaves like a page that we can edit like any other. Click on “edit menu” to edit the menu in the same form we used earlier when editing a page. Add a new line at the bottom of the menu, and type the name or title of the page you created. Now select all the text you’ve just typed, and click the “insert/edit link” button (2nd row, near the middle, looks like a short length of chain). In the pop-up window which opens, in the “link URL” box, enter the name of the page you created (not the title, if they are different), making sure it is spelled and capitalised exactly as it is in the web address of the page. Click the “update” button to close the pop-up window, and click the “save” button on the main editing form. You should now see a link to your page at the bottom of the menu, so visitors to the site can jump directly to your page from anywhere in the site. If you want to be a bit cleverer, you can enter a brief description of your page in the “title” box, so that when visitors to the site hover their mouse over the link in the menu, your description is shown. You also can choose whether the link will open in the same browser window, or open a new window whilst leaving the current window still pointing at the EditMe demo site. You can also include links in the page you created, in the same way. Edit your page again, and type some text which you want to make into a hyperlink. Select the text and click the “insert/edit hyperlink” button. Type either the name of a page in the EditMe demo site, or the full address of a page on another web site, into the “link URL” box. Click “insert” and then “Save” and the link will be visible on your page. AttachmentsFiles can be attached to EditMe pages in a similar way to attaching them to e-mails. Visit the page you created, and click the “attachments” link. Click one of the “browse” buttons and browse to a suitable file on the hard disk, e.g. a picture or a Word document or a text file. Also, enter a meaningful description of the file you’re attaching. You can attach up to five files to the page at once like this. Once you’ve selected and described all the files you want to attach to this page, click the “submit” button to upload them (this can take a few minutes if they are large files and you are on a dial-up connection). You can then select and upload more files, or click the “view page” or “edit page” links to view or edit your page. Adding pictures to your pageThere are two ways of including a picture in a page. Which one you use depends on whether you’ve attached the picture to the page or whether it’s elsewhere on the web. Either way, start by editing the page you’ve created, and move the cursor to the position in the text of the page where you want the picture to appear. If you’ve attached a picture to your page, use the “insert image or link into selection” drop-down list to select the picture you’ve attached. If the picture is elsewhere on the web, or maybe if it’s one which is attached to another page in this EditMe site, click the “insert/edit image” button (2nd row, about one-third of the way in from the right-hand side, looks like a picture of a tree). Copy/paste the web address of the picture into the “image URL” box, enter a meaningful description and a title, and click the “insert” button. Click the “save” button to see your page complete with the picture. Linking to attached filesIf you’ve attached a file to your page, it will already be listed at the bottom of your page unless you chose to hide it when you attached it. If you want to include a link to the file at a certain point in your page, select the text which you want to use as a hyperlink and use the “insert link or image into selection” drop-down list to select the file you attached. Click the “save” button to see your page complete with a link to the attachment. SearchWhen viewing any page in the site, click the “search” link and enter a word which you used in the text of the page you created. You should find that the search engine finds your page, unless it’s a word which is commonly used in the rest of the EditMe site. Rename pageWhen viewing any page in the site, click the “rename” link and enter a new name for the page. This won’t change the title of the page, which is displayed at the top of the page, but it will change its web address. For example, if I renamed the page called “MyPage” to “MyPage2”, the web address of the page would become http://scan.editme.com. If you do this, make sure you update any links to this page elsewhere in the site so that they point to the new address. SettingsThe “settings” link is only available to administrators of the EditMe site, and contains lots of technical and administrative things which day-to-day users don’t need to worry about. Administrators can maintain security policies, change the look and feel of the web site, and look after the administration of registered users. If you are interested in the technical side of web site management and would like to be an administrator, write to simon at swindonclimate.org.uk Attachments
