Food Network Next Steps

We decided we can make a useful start on these key areas:

Champions

Simon Smith of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust (WWT) volunteered to take the lead on a programme of Community Champions, based on WWT's Compost Ambassadors scheme. The idea is that champions could own themes such as the benefits of cooking skills, where to find local food and why it's important, how to go about growing your own food etc, and would promote their theme through any available channel - from formal talks to chats in the pub.

If you are interested in taking part please contact Simon: simons@wiltshirewildlife.org.uk

10-minute Transition

Many people also said they could make use of a bluffer's guide to peak oil and climate change and Transition, which they could use at talks and events they attend as an introduction to their own presentation about their business. The Food steering group is going to produce something that could be used as an aide memoire or as powerpoint slides, which should enable people to reach any audience.

If this would be useful for you and you have ideas on which elements it should contain please get in touch: transition@swindonclimate.org.uk

Local food supply

Mike Pickering, the Environmental Officer for Mid-counties Cooperative (which sponsored the Networking Event) is exploring ways for Coop to work with TS. He is working with Coop Retail colleagues to look at how to approach local food producers with a view to developing a range of local food in Old Town's Coop. It is hoped to host a future food networking event at the store, where the public could meet local suppliers and learn more about transition.

Swindon's Woodland Games

We are also hoping to have a presence at Swindon Borough Council's 3G Woodland Games event on 5 September 2009.
