24th June: This will be a presentation by Duncan Robinson about his recent travels to Antarctica with RWE npower. These may be the biggest producers of coal fired electricity generation, but come and hear what he has to say!
The talk starts at 7.30pm with refreshments from 7.00
In March 2009, Duncan was one of the npower team that accompanied the famous polar explorer and environmental campaigner, Robert Swan OBE, on an expedition to Antarctica.
Duncan says of his experiences:
" I wanted to learn from Robert, to help to inspire us all to take steps that together will make a difference, that will reduce the impact of global warming, and will help to save Antarctica."
Following the film, there will be an opportunity for questions and further discussion.
Notes
Robert Swan was the first man to walk to both the South and the North Pole, where he witnessed first hand the effects of global warming; an early break of the sea ice at the North Pole almost spelt death for him and his team. Through his organisation ‘2041’, he now campaigns for the preservation of Antarctica to ensure that it is not devastated in the pursuit of oil when the current moratorium on mineral extraction in Antarctica ends in the year 2041.
The expedition was part of the ongoing partnership between npower and 2041; working to provide renewable energy at 2041's education base camp (E-Base) on King George Island, Antarctica. The E-Base is for the benefit of future generations of young people who can visit it, either in person or via the internet, and learn about the beauty and fragility of Antarctica and the urgent need for conservation.
